Spotlight on a Doula

karen codd Karen Codd has been a Volunteer Doula since September 2007. Here is what she’d like to say about the project:
1) Why did you want to become a Volunteer Doula?
I've always been greatly interested in pregnancy and birth. I have three children of my own and felt this was a great opportunity, with guidance from the training, to help and support ladies who need extra care at this sometimes difficult time.

2) How many women have you supported and what kind of issues have you faced?
I have supported four ladies to date. Along the way I have come across issues such as lack of support from family and friends, drug misuse and working alongside other support agencies, such as social workers and drug counsellors. I have also worked with an interpreter, which was much less daunting than I thought it would be!

3) What do you feel you have gained personally and professionally from the project – both from the training and the volunteering?
I have gained an OCN Volunteer Doula Qualification, as well as training in Natal Hypnotherapy, Domes-tic Violence awareness, Active Birth, and more. These courses have been very valuable in enabling me to give the best support to all my ladies. The training is ongoing and we are continuously asked if any situations have arisen with our ladies which we would consider it beneficial to have training on. Being involved in the Volunteer Doula Project has given me increased and valuable knowledge, helping me with my chosen career path and strengthening my desire and determination to follow my dream. The experience is very rewarding: it’s a great feeling when women look up to you with confidence and appreciation.

4) What are your future plans?
I have just completed a year-long Access Course at Hull College, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and am in the process of applying for Midwifery at Hull University. If I am lucky enough to get on the course, I’ll be starting in September 2009. I feel very privileged that my Doula Volunteering is helping me fulfil my aspirations, and would like to continue to volunteer whatever the future holds. “Life’s what you make it, so make it better'.
