Spotlight on a Doula - Tracey Perkins

Tracey Perkins has been a Volunteer Doula since October 2009.

Why did you want to become a Volunteer Doula?

I became a volunteer doula quite by accident. I stumbled upon this project at a promotion to get people in Hull involved in volunteering. I came along to the Open Evening and was amazed at what the project did and its objectives. To support vulnerable, isolated pregnant women at what is after all a frightening and apprehensive time in their life - what could be more rewarding?

How many women have you supported, and what kind of issues have you faced?

I have supported 7 women, all with different issues and ethnic and cultural backgrounds. I have been involved in core meetings with social services and have supported mums dealing with asylum issues.

What do you feel you have gained personally and professionally from the project – both from the training and the volunteering?

The training I have received has been fantastic, delivered in an informative, supportive and relaxed way. It has opened my eyes to what a natural birth should ideally be for a woman and how I can help that to happen.

I have gained so much from being involved in this project. I have met some amazing women and made some good friends too. I have alot more knowledge about birth and pregnancy both anti natal and post natal, however the key things I feel I have gained from this project are a feeling of purpose and confidence for which I will always be grateful.

What are your plans for the future?

My future plans to me are clear: I choose to remain a doula as long as I can. I'm proud to be a doula and will continue to the best of my ability to support women and promote this project.
